As We Gather
What is worship? What is happening when we come into the presence of the Holy God in worship? Isaiah’s vision of worship in the throne room of heaven displays some of the same features that are present in our worship today, though the appearance is not quite so dramatic. Today we look at worship, why we do it and what it means to be a worshiping community. We will celebrate Holy Communion at this service.

“Citizens of Heaven”
Pastor Mike is leading a study and discussion that follows up from the worship series “Citizens of Heaven.” We seek to be led by Jesus in a contentious election season by looking to His word regarding some of the big items at issue in our country. This week we will talk about caring for the environment. What does God’s Word say about our responsibilities regarding His creation?

Worship Tech Upgrade Schedule
Thanks again to all who have generously supported the much-needed upgrade to our sanctuary audio, visual and streaming technology.
As the time for the actual work draws close, the availability of the sanctuary will be impacted. The prep work in the Sanctuary will begin on May 27. After that date, none of the technology in the sanctuary (except lights) will be functional until the upgrade is complete on June 16. No events will be scheduled in the sanctuary during this time. This means that we will be worshiping in the Faith Chapel on June 2 and June 9. We also plan to stream those services.
We look forward to worshiping on June 16 in the sanctuary with our new screens, new audio, and upgraded streaming equipment.
Worship Tech Upgrade Work Day May 27
We are calling on volunteers to help us remove the current tech equipment from the worship tech area, including the present desks. We will be doing this on Monday, May 27 starting at 9:00 AM. Yes, this is Memorial Day, but with enough workers, this will likely just take a couple of hours. Please let Pastor Mike, Jacob Bartelt or Josh Wright know if you are available to help.
Joy Dahl and Justine Rollin
Two of our teachers completed the process of becoming commission ministers of religion (teachers) of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. Preschool Director Joy Dahl and Fourth Grade Teacher Justine Rollin have now been called as teachers of St. John’s Lutheran Church. They will be formally commissioned and installed during worship on June 2.
For the past two years, Joy and Justine have been involved in a process known in the LCMS as “Colloquy.” This is a process by which teachers who did not graduate from one of our Concordia Universities receive the same certification that teacher candidates receive when completing the education program at one of our affiliated Concordia universities. As called commissioned teachers, our Church Body and our congregation are declaring that they are teachers of the faith, called to ministry in the Church.

Unforgivable? How God’s Forgiveness Transforms our Lives
By Ted Kober and Mark Rockenbach
We who have been forgiven freely by Christ are called to forgive those who sin against us. But this is often much easier said than done. How do we forgive those who have seriously offended and hurt us? We know this is essential to the Christian life, so much so that Jesus put it in the middle of the way He wants us to pray, where we pray that God forgive us in the same way we forgive others. But how do we do this when we don’t feel like it?
Ted Kober and Mark Rockenbach have provided a very helpful and practical book addressing that topic. It all starts and is empowered by taking to heart the gracious forgiveness that we have received through the death and resurrection of Jesus. But then what? How do I practically apply that do the broken relationships in my life?
In some ways this is more of a workbook than a textbook. The authors are intentionally writing for those who are struggling with this topic. Each chapter includes questions that encourage personal reflection and application, as well as a call to write out prayers for God’s help in working toward forgiveness. This book is written to lead readers along that journey.
Ted Kober is writing out of his decades of work as a Certified Christian Conciliator. Mark Rockenbach, in addition to being a mental health counselor, is an associate professor at Concordia Seminary. Their years of experience with this topic have provided them with many examples with which to illustrate the points that they are making.
I want to thank Pam Barker for providing this book to me. She attended a session led by the authors at the Best Practices Conference in Phoenix in February. Look for this book, along with most of the previously recommended books on the Church Library cart in the Narthex, available for checking out.

Stephen Ministry
Stephen Ministry – Why Lay Ministry? Stephen Ministry is based on the idea that all Christians are ministers. The responsibility for passing on God’s love is for all Christians, not just a chosen few. God has given us all gifts for ministry and called us to put those gifts to use. Stephen Ministry is a way people with special gifts for caring ministry can use those gifts to bring Christ’s love to people in need. To learn more about Stephen Ministry and what Stephen Ministers do, contact Penni Cremen (707-483-9321) or Pastor Mike at the church office (707-255-0119).
