9 All my longings lie open before you, Lord;
my sighing is not hidden from you.
10 My heart pounds, my strength fails me;
even the light has gone from my eyes.
11 My friends and companions avoid me because of my wounds;
my neighbors stay far away.
12 Those who want to kill me set their traps,
those who would harm me talk of my ruin;
all day long they scheme and lie.
13 I am like the deaf, who cannot hear,
like the mute, who cannot speak;
14 I have become like one who does not hear,
whose mouth can offer no reply.
15 Lord, I wait for you;
you will answer, Lord my God.
16 For I said, “Do not let them gloat
or exalt themselves over me when my feet slip.”

What struck me in these verses today is how they could also be the words of Jesus on his way to crucifixion. Yes, these are the words of David, when he is overwrought because of his sin, and the consequences which came upon him as judgment on his sin. But this is Scripture, and the author behind the author is the Holy Spirit. And as Jesus told his disciples in Luke 24:44 “This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.” The Psalms, along with all of the Scriptures, points to Christ.
David is reeling under the consequences of his sin. But the full scope of the judgement for his sin did not fall on David, but rather Jesus. The mission of Jesus, flowing from the love of the Father was to initiate the new covenant by His death, taking on Himself all of the penalty and judgment for all of the sin and brokenness of all the world. So Jesus is the one whose friends and companions avoided him. Jesus is the one who was trapped by those who wanted to kill him, who schemed and lied to bring about His ruin. He is the one who was silent, deaf and mute as He was condemned. And He was the one who ultimately commended himself to His father: “Into your hands I commend my spirit.” On the cross, Jesus was the worst sinner in history, bearing the full brunt of the consequence of every sin. For us. For me.
So my prayer today is again one of repentance, but also thanksgiving and praise for the Savior whose love led Him to work such reconciliation for me at such cost. My prayer is that I may live this day in repentance and faith as I follow Him.
