Team Aaron travels to Roseburg, Oregon to bring comfort after the shootings at Umpqua Community College
Team members Autumn Zimmerman and Tim & Christy Kramer traveled on Sunday, October 4th with Aaron to Roseburg, Oregon by invitation from the LCMS Northwest District Disaster Response Coordinator. They joined ten other LCC and affiliate members with five other Comfort Dogs from Nebraska, Illinois and Colorado.
Initially (Monday) the Comfort Dog team was the only outside organization allowed on campus. They were even escorted in to the center of campus near the student center. They visited the campus each day comforting the staff, students, and administration. It was very difficult for the UCC community to return to campus after the shooting, but the dogs were a bridge to making that a bit easier to do.
They also visited:
- 911 Dispatch – met with woman who took the original call
- Fire fighters and EMT’s – some had never seen a gunshot wound before
- The local high school
- Child welfare services – family of the victims work in this department
- Sheriff Hanlan and the Roseburg police force
- UCC Veterans Center counselor
- Mercy Hospital ER
- UCC Child Development Center
“In the midst of crisis God works – and works through His people. Healing – Hope – Compassion – the listening presence of another and the soft fur of a Comfort Dog; all things that God does and works through. What an impact for Jesus Christ in bringing the Mercy, Compassion, Presence and Proclamation of Jesus Christ to those suffering!” Lutheran Church Charities
“In talking with the deployed team, what echoes in my mind is LCC team leader Rich Martin saying … “We have never prayed with more people in a deployment than this one. It is non-stop, people wanting to talk and wanting us to pray!””
