This Week’s Memory Verse
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. ~Romans 6:23
We continue our worship series on Paul’s letter to the Romans. Grace was the heart of the message that Paul preached. As he began to prepare to go to Rome to preach and teach there, he sent a letter to the Church to serve as an introduction to his message. That letter, Paul’s letter to the Romans, is the most systematic and thorough treatment of the plan of salvation in the New Testament. Reading almost like a theology text book, Paul lays out the need for grace and the amazing gift of grace.
Paul presents the Gospel in terms of slavery and freedom. We are slaves. The question is whether we are slaves to sin or slaves to God? What does it mean to be a slave to sin? What does it mean to be a slave to grace? Today we rejoice in the amazing freedom of our “slavery” to Christ.
Sunday, we also celebrate Reformation. We celebrate the 498th anniversary of the Reformation, giving God thanks that we are saved by grace alone, through faith alone, preaching and teaching the truths of Scripture alone. We also pray for God’s ongoing work of Reformation in the Church, continually calling us to repentance, faith, and boldness for the sake of the mission.
