This Week’s Memory Verse
Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that He may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you. Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings. ~1 Peter 5:6-9
As We Gather
The Mission of God is to bring reconciliation and restoration to all humanity and all creation. But He made the decision from the beginning that He would only carry out that mission through people. We are that people. What does it mean to be the agents of God’s mission? In other words: Who are we? What are we here for?
This new worship series explores the mission of God’s people in its broadest form. We will follow the story of God’s people from Creation to New Creation, and see how God’s people have been called to the same mission all along the way. We are part of a people that includes Abraham, Moses, David, Peter, Paul and others. The mission He has given His people is not merely a duty or task, but a blessed privilege of being His representatives to bring blessing and restoration to all creation. What a privilege! What a blessing!
Our goal in this series is that as we come to understand more fully the mission we have been given, we will embrace and live it more enthusiastically and effectively.

- Built on the Rock Update: The “Built on the Rock” appeal officially began Sunday, 19 Jun 16. Three months later, we moved worship services to the parish hall and Hoag Husted, our general contractor, directed the seismic upgrade to that building. In less than seven months and on time, his team completed the entire scope of the project—and even more! And, although we returned to the sanctuary for worship on Palm Sunday weekend, now, after fifty-two weeks, we officially end the appeal raising money for this project. The goal, approved by Voters, was to raise $186,000 in designated offerings. As of 11 Jun 17, we met that goal! Praise God for His blessings and for making this generosity possible in the hearts of His people! “O Lord our God, all this abundance that we have provided for building You a house for Your holy name comes from Your hand and is all Your own.” (1 Chronicles 29:16) (ESV)The seismic upgrade strengthened the sanctuary building to today’s engineering standards, focusing on three main areas: 1) Properly anchoring stone veneer to the east and west walls; 2) Enhancing sidewall connections to the lower and main roofs; and 3) Strengthening front shear walls (front of the nave by the hymnal boards). The project successfully accomplished these intended purposes. As the project unfolded, we seized opportunities to accomplish tasks, outside the scope of the original project, which were necessary and advantageous for the fruitful completion of this project and for future benefits to the congregation. These additional elements included:
- Moving & Storage
- Design Consultant
- Flooring (Abatement, New Product & Installation)
- Additional Engineering (Saved Storage Room; Made Walls Stronger than Original Design)
- Prep-Work for Upgraded Sound System (Trenching, Electrical Power Circuits, Floor Covers)
- Pulpit Removal and Chancel Floor Extension
- Fresh Paint (Interior Walls, Exterior West Wall & Arch, Exterior Parish Hall Arch)
- New Counter, Sink & Electrical Outlets in Flower Room
- Brighter, Energy-Efficient LED Light Fixtures in Aisles and Under Balcony
Even after achieving these extra benefits, total project cost to the congregation was $428,643. That was $32,357 under our $461,000 budget, approved last June by the Voters. That allowed us to cover remaining balances, $1,107 and $6,015, representing the church cost-share of the sanctuary chairs and upgraded sound system, respectively. These elements were also outside the original project scope.
All this—even more than we originally dreamed possible—we owe to our Generous Father in heaven. He made everything possible: The safe, thorough and successful completion of this project; plus additional “mini-projects and benefits;” plus the generosity of people throughout our St. John’s Lutheran community! This is something we celebrate! In the words of King David after completing an appeal for offerings to build the temple: “Blessed are You, O LORD, the God of Israel our father, forever and ever. Yours, O LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is Yours. Yours is the kingdom, O LORD, and You are exalted as head above all. Both riches and honor come from You, and You rule over all. In Your hand are power and might, and in Your hand it is to make great and to give strength to all. And now we thank You, our God, and praise Your glorious name.”
