Esther 2:19-3:15

What is striking in today’s passage is Mordecai’s refusal to pay homage to Haman. One of the fascinating things about this book is how God is spoken around, instead of directly referred to. It’s quite clear that Mordecai’s refusal to bow down to Hama is rooted in his Jewish faith, most likely the keeping of the first commandment and not affording anything other than God such honor. Haman’s intent to wipe out all of Mordecai’s people also indicates that it had something to do with their “Jewishness.”
Keeping the first commandment, worshiping God alone, serving Him first above all else, is not always a matter of overt worship. It is principally lived in the decisions that we make each day about the living of our lives. Is Christ truly the center? Does He define my goals and purposes? In what ways am I bowing down to Haman through my choices and decisions and actions?
So my prayer today is that I may live this day and each day truly keeping Christ first in all things. I pray that in my actions, words and deeds, that my heart may only bow down to Him and honor Him.
