The Mission Farm at St. John’s Lutheran Church was launched in 2009 with the mission to supply the Napa County Food Bank, county residents and other charitable organizations with fresh, nutritious produce that is locally and organically grown.
We are the largest contributor of fresh food to the food bank.
In 2012 we donated nearly 8,000 pounds of fresh, organic produce.
In 2013 our production was reduced due to weather and other conditions to around 6,000 pounds.
The harvest for 2014 increased to 11,000 pounds!
And the 2015 harvest was a glorious 12,000 pounds (6 tons) of beautiful fresh organic produce!
The total for the month of October we have harvested 1494 lb of fresh vegetables for the food bank. This brings our year to date total to 14,957 lbs! We still have 2 full months to go although the season is rapidly winding down. We are hoping and praying that we finish out the year with over 15,000lb. God has been very good to us this year.
The Mission Farm will be one of the forty-three participating non-profit organizations serving the community included in the 2016 Napa Valley Give!Guide.
Organic tomatoes, potatoes, lettuce, beets, corn, onions, garlic, summer and fall squash, pumpkins, carrots, are among the current plantings. These vary by year and season. In 2012 and 2013 we added various fruit trees to the mix. Peaches, plums, pluots, apples and apricots are all producing well.
Come join us-no experience necessary!
Volunteers do all of the hands-on work of running the Mission Farm including tilling, soil amending, planting, weeding, and harvesting to name just a few.
We love building relationships with individuals and community groups who care about sustainable agriculture and about hunger & nutrition. Our volunteers come from St. John’s Lutheran Church and School and include many other caring, community-minded folks.
In 2015 workers spent over 4000 hours on the farm, helping to fulfill its mission.
There are workers out there every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday morning from 8:30 AM to 12:00 PM.
Work gloves are a good idea if anyone wants to help out.
