Discerning the Body
The celebration of the Lord’s Supper is a celebration of His redeeming death and resurrection for us. It is also a celebration of the unity which we have in Him. As we eat the bread which is His body and drink the wine which is His blood, we are one with Him and each other. But what happens when a congregation is not unified? What does it mean when the focus is more on individual concerns that oneness with brothers and sisters in Christ? This is what was happening in Corinth, and it leads Paul to write strong words to them, calling them to “discern the body” as they gather for the meal. What does this mean for us today?
