The NOVEMBER 2022 monthly Vine is available on our website.  To keep up-to-date with what is happening at St. John's,   CLICK HERE . “Unsaintly Saints” November 6, 2022 Please CLICK HERE to download the service notes.       As We Gather Today we celebrate all the saints of the Lord.  We especially give thanks to the Lord for those who have completed their earthly lives and are now in the presence of God awaiting the resurrection.  But the Bible uses the word “saints” more broadly.  It term refers not to the super-spiritual or heroically righteous, but rather to all who trust in Jesus as Savior from sin.   What does it mean for our lives that we are called “saints” by grace through faith? We celebrate Holy Communion at this service. Sunday Bible Classes  Foundations:  Basic Christian Teachings Pastor Mike is leading a nine-session overview of the basic teachings of the Christian Faith on Sundays at 11:00 AM in Room 10.  This class is an opportunity to grow in understanding what it means to follow Jesus, and to learn about what it means to be part of our faith community. This week’s session is the third of several lessons on living the Christian life.  This week we focus on the sacraments of Baptism and the Lord’s Supper. Romans Joel Wahlers is leading a study of the book of Romans on Sundays at 11:00 in Room 8.  Paul's letter to the Romans is considered by many to be one of the most important books ever written on the Christian faith. Writing to Christians, the apostle Paul defines the Gospel, explores its depths, and discusses its significance and implications for the Christian life.  This class makes use of Right Now Video teaching by J.D. Greear. The class meets on Sundays at 11:00 AM in Room 8. Women’s Bible Study The Women’s Bible Study will next meet on November 15th at 10:00 AM in the Sanctuary.   All are invited! The study is using “Christ Esteem” by Don Matzat. Thanksgiving Eve Worship We will have a Thanksgiving Communion service on Wednesday, November 23 at 7:00 PM in the sanctuary.  We encourage worshippers to bring non-perishable food items for the Napa Food Bank. Best Practices for Ministry Conference BPM 2023 will take place on February 16-18 at Christ Church Lutheran in Phoenix, Arizona.    Best Practice for Ministry is a free conference for pastors, church workers and lay people.  The purpose is to learn and share ideas and practices to help us grow in living God’s Mission.  For more information, please CLICK HERE.     As we have done in the past, St. John’s will be covering lodging for all participants from St. John’s, but not transportation.  The conference itself is free.  If you are interested, in addition to registering at the link above, please notify the church office. I want to give a big thank you to everybody who attended Trunk or Treat! The trunks were absolutely amazing and set the tone for an all around great family event! Can’t wait till next year’s version! High school youth & Surge will not meet this week. St. John's Lutheran School is sponsoring a Dine and Donate Event at Villa Corona (Bel Aire Plaza) on Tuesday, November 8th for lunch or dinner, dine-in or take-out.  Please bring attached flyer and Villa Corona will donate 20% to our 6th grade Outdoor Education trip.    CLICK HERE for flyer. SJLS Theatre is proud to present our 17th Annual Production:  Disney’s Newsies We welcome you to join us for this exciting musical!  Our talented actors have been working hard and are so excited to finally perform for an audience.  Thanks in advance for supporting our amazing students! Newsies: The Broadway Musical, based on the 1992 Disney movie musical, is inspired by the true events of the New York newsboys strike of 1899.  You’ll feel empowered and impressed by the courage of the newspaper kids who fought for the rights of all of the working kids of New York.  We have an incredible cast that has been working passionately to bring this story to life for you.  There are many fantastic songs and awesome choreography in this show. Veterans Day Celebration at St. John’s Lutheran Church and School In honor of Veterans Day 2022, we will be creating a flag in the Narthex of our Church. This flag will be made from blue stars, red stars, and white stars. The BLUE stars will have the names of current active military personnel. The RED stars will have the names of former military personnel, still living. The WHITE stars will have the names of former military personnel, deceased. We will have baskets of stars available in the Narthex on Sunday, November 6, 2022.  If you are unable to attend worship on Sunday, please feel free to email the names you would like placed, as well as the color of the star, to Christy Wood at cwood@stjohnsnapa.org. Christmas Tree Decorating 2022 Christmas tree decorating will take place on Thursday, December 8th (stringing lights on the trees) from 4 – 6 p.m. and Friday, December 9th (hanging ornaments and arranging poinsettias) from 2 -4 p.m.   If you would like to assist the Worship Preparation Team on either or both days, please come!  Contact Bob or Doris Klein or Betsy Gewirz with any questions.
