“Jesus is Better”

As We Gather
Today we begin a worship series on the letter to the Hebrews. This letter is actually a written sermon to believers who were struggling with their faith. They were being tempted to go back to a life without Jesus, a life rooted in the unfulfilled promises and pictures of the Old Testament. The writer of this letter seeks to show them in many ways that Jesus is better, not only better than what they had before, but better than everything.
Today we are tempted by many competing voices, activities, philosophies and even entertainments, all competing for our allegiance. This timely letter speaks to us today as well, proclaiming in unshakeable clarity and conviction that “Jesus is Better!”
Live-stream and in-person worship begin at 9:30 AM. Please CLICK HERE to download the link to the live-stream itself.
We will be streaming on our Facebook Page as well: CLICK HERE .
Worship Survey
One Service or Two Services?
We are seeking your input regarding an important question for our St. John’s community: Should we continue offering one blended service on Sunday mornings, or should we resume offering two services, one traditional and one contemporary?
Prior to the COVID lockdown, we had two services each Sunday, one traditional (hymnal liturgies, robes, organ) and the other contemporary (Informal, worship band). During COVID, we have had one service, blending elements of both styles.
Please take a minute to complete a two-question survey as we seek to gather input to help leadership determine the best path forward for our ministry and mission. CLICK HERE for the survey. Thank you for your input.
Congregational Meeting on June 12
At the annual budget and election meeting on Sunday, June 12 the proposed “Ministry Plan and Budget” for the 2022-2023 fiscal year was adopted by the congregation with no alterations.. Please click here for the adopted “Ministry Plan and Budget for 2022-2023.”
The congregation also elected five members of the Board of Directors for 2022-2023. John Van Hofwegen and Todd Yoder were re-elected to the Board and will begin their third terms. Newly elected to the board were Bob DeYoung, Lauren Huss, and Martin Meissenhalter.
We give thanks to God for our Board of Directors and for their work. We especially give thanks to God for Michele Arnold, Lori Gutierrez and Clare King, who are completing their terms and will be going off the board.
Sunday Bible Class Intersection of Church and State
In Matthew 22:21 Jesus said, “Give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.” What is the relationship between Church and state, and what does it mean for us who are citizens of both? What does the Bible say? What does our nation’s constitution say? Is America a Christian nation, and what difference does it make how we answer?
We continue our four week study this coming Sunday in room 10 at 11:00. This week’s session is entitled: “What Did the Founders Have in Mind?” We’ll be looking at the first amendment, as well as the Lutheran “Two Kingdom” theology of church and state. To view the video from the first session, CLICK HERE.
Welcoming our Guests
We are seeking to restart a modified greeter/welcoming ministry for Sunday morning. The goal is to have a welcome/information table so that we can share information and items with those who are new to worship at St. John’s. Our goal is to begin this in August in time for the beginning of the new school year.
If you are interested in being part of this team and helping us welcome people to St. John’s, please email Connections Ministry Leader Josh Wright at sjlcsocialmedia@gmail.com.
Joining Jesus Recording of the 6/9 Navigation Zoom with Rev. Greg Finke
Did you miss the Navigation Zoom with Rev. Greg Finke on June 9? In addition to being encouraged by Rev. Finke in our joining Jesus mission, several people shared stories about how they are “seeking the kingdom” and seeing where Jesus is already at work. The zoom session was recorded and is available to watch. CLICK HERE .
VBS is Days Away! – Volunteers still needed!!!
VBS is just days away! It’s so exciting! I could still use a few adult volunteers to help make this the best VBS we can offer. If you have any questions or any interest in being a part of VBS please contact Kevin Mathison. Even if you are unable to help physically on campus next week I ask that you join us as a prayer partner and pray for the ministry. Thanks y’all!
The only way this will be possible is with many helping hands. This link will allow you to register as a volunteer as well. Click here to Register!
Please consider joining us for VBS this summer as we hope to impact as many kids with the Good News of Jesus as we can! Incoming 7th Graders and above are eligible to volunteer for VBS. VBS will take place June 20-24 from 9am- Noon.
