The point of the Abide Devotion is to model letting the Word of God lead us in our prayer life. Each day I post a passage from the Moravian Texts reading schedule, and then write about whatever in that passage jumps out at me that day. I’m looking for a Kairos, a word from God, something in that text that speaks to something in me. Then I ask myself why that passage jumps out at me, and what that means for what I should be praying about, and how I should be living that day. And then I write about it.
This is what I’ve done for quite awhile, recording my thoughts and prayers with pen and paper in a journal. I started the Abide Devotion to share with others this approach to letting the word lead to prayer.
But I always close the devotion with the question “What is the Word leading you to prayer about today?” My intent for those reading is not necessarily that they pray what I’m praying, but rather that they listen in the text for what God is saying to them, and let that lead their prayers and their lives. God likely has something different to say to you than He does to me.
That being said, I will not be posting for the next several weeks. Teresa and I are joining our daughter Danika in Great Britain and will spend the next three weeks touring England, Wales, and Scotland. We’re looking forward to this time together. Although I’ll still be in the word daily, and will be resuming my pen and paper journal – after all God takes no vacation from blessing me, so I take no vacation from listening to Him – I will not be posting. I plan to resume the posts on May 1.
In the meantime, I encourage you to continue listening to God in His word. If you would like to continue this journey through Romans into 1 Corinthians, I suggest you follow the Moravian texts. You can find the schedule here: www.moravian.org. You can even sign up for a daily email of the texts for day. The texts are also the recommended Bible Reading we post at St. John’s in the newsletter and bulletin.
May God bless your hearing of His voice!
