“’Honor your father and mother’—which is the first commandment with a promise— ‘so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.’”
(Ephesians 6:2-3)
This week, we’re focusing especially on being thankful for community, for the people in our lives. Today I am giving thanks to God for my parents.
As many of you know, both have my parents have passed away in the last two years. But I am still giving thanks to God for them and will continue to do so as long as I live. I’m thankful, of course, that they raised me and provided for me when I was young. But beyond that, I’m thankful because a whole lot of who I am today flows from how they raised me.
From my parents, I learned the priority of faith, to put serving, following and honoring God first in my life. From my parents, I learned the importance of family. From my parents, I learned about the importance of honoring your spouse. From my parents, I inherited a love of music, as they supported and encouraged my growth as a musician. From my parents, I learned that we are here to serve, as they inculcated a serving outlook in my life from an early age. And there’s so much more!
Thanks be to God for my parents!
