Act Justly, Love Mercy, Walk Humbly (Micah 6-7)
Last school year, our school theme was based on Micah 6:8 – “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” Throughout the year, we focused on following and serving the Lord as we emphasized His call to “act justly, love mercy, walk humbly.” Here is a link to the song that I wrote for that school year.
In these chapters, the Lord is calling His people to turn away from sin and to trust that He is the God who would redeem and rescue them. But in the verses leading up to 6:8, Micah wonders what it means to follow God. How wonders what God really wants from him as a demonstration that his heart and life belong to God. Micah 6:8 is the answer.
We are called to pursue justice. This means much more than the legal requirements and expectations of the state. It means justice from God’s perspective which is grounded in each person being treated and respected with the dignity that is theirs because they are made in God’s image. Mercy includes forgiveness, but also the call to help those in need, going well beyond what may ever be deserved or owed. Walking humbly with God is living with the awareness that He is God and that we are not, and is lived out in lives of obedience and faithfulness and trust.
So my prayer today is that God would give grace and strength that I might indeed act justly, love mercy and walk humbly before Him. I pray that I would not only demonstrate justice, mercy and humility, but would grow in these pursuits in the days ahead.
What is the Word leading you to pray about today?
