Psalm 110
1 The Lord says to my lord: “Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.”
2 The Lord will extend your mighty scepter from Zion, saying, “Rule in the midst of your enemies!”
3 Your troops will be willing on your day of battle. Arrayed in holy splendor, your young men will come to you like dew from the morning’s womb. j
4 The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind: “You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.”
5 The Lord is at your right hand; he will crush kings on the day of his wrath.
6 He will judge the nations, heaping up the dead and crushing the rulers of the whole earth.
7 He will drink from a brook along the way, and so he will lift his head high. [1]
______________
What is striking in this psalm is the depiction of complete victory by the One whom the psalm focuses on, namely Jesus. This psalm is quoted 17 times in the New Testament and clearly is understood to refer to Jesus, the Son of David, the Lord. He is the conquering Lord, and He is the eternal priest. In this psalm He is being pictured as triumphant over all enemies, and judge of all the earth.
What do I take away from this psalm this morning? The assurance that my Lord is truly Lord of all. We need this assurance and reminder and conviction in a world in which His lordship is hidden, and outwardly opposed. Jesus is ruling and reigning, and so His will is to rule and reign in and through my life today. He would have me live my life with this as the foundation: He is Lord of all.
So my prayer today is that I would in fact be led by this truth in my thoughts, words and deeds today. Despite what is going on in the world, despite the opposition to God’s mission taking place around me and throughout the world, Jesus is Lord. I pray that I may follow Him in faithfulness and service today.
What is the Word leading you to pray about today?
