Judgment and Grace (Isaiah 24-25)

What is striking to me in these chapters is how the prophet weaves together judgment and deliverance. In fact one of the main points of these chapters is that the Lord’s deliverance of His people, and the ultimate fulfillment of His promises, involves judgment on those who oppose the Lord and His will. This is not a rare biblical theme. For instance, in the Exodus, God’s deliverance of Israel involved His judgment on Egypt
Judgment and Grace do go together. As we confess in the creeds each week, we are looking forward to Christ’s appearance as judge. But God’s grace to us is seen principally in Jesus’ willingness to take the judgment upon us that we deserve. Our prayer and our participation in God’s mission has as its goal the bringing all people under the protection of that grace. But for those who refuse, the day of Christ’s return is the day of judgment, and the eradication of all evil is part of the blessing of that day.
So this passage led me to pray for God’s mission on earth, for people of all nations to come to faith in the Savior, and so come to know His grace. I am praying in thankfulness that Jesus took on Himself the judgment due me, and I pray that I may be used by God this day, and each day, as His agent to draw others to His grace as well.
