What struck me in this section was the last verse: Michal’s despising of David.
David was intent on doing things correctly this time. He inquired of the Lord not just regarding battles, but also regarding the Ark of the Covenant and how to move it to Jerusalem. He followed the Law carefully. Not only that, he sought to honor the Lord by making it a joyful celebration.
But one person was neither impressed nor delighted by David’s efforts. His wife, Michal, Saul’s daughter. Now, there is a whole history of David and Michal that led to this point, not the least of which being the animosity which Saul had toward David.
But the point here is this: You may be following the Lord in all the right ways. You may be carefully observing His word. You may be inquiring of Him for guidance, and following His leading. And still there will be some who will oppose and despise you and your efforts. And their reasons may or may not have anything to do with your service to the Lord.
But we serve the Lord anyway. We are not doing it for the praise of anyone, let alone those who are opposed to us. We serve the Lord because He is our Lord and because our hope and our future are in Him. As Jesus said to the disciples at the last supper: “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart. I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).
So my prayer today is that the Lord enable me to serve Him faithfully, even when there are naysayers. I pray that I may seek to honor Christ in all that I do, even when others misunderstand and misrepresent.
What is the Word leading you to pray about today?
