Hope (Ezekiel 37:1-38:6)
In a book filled with “object lessons,” this one stands out. The vision of the dry bones depicts not only the utterly hopeless state of the people of God, as dead as dry bones, but also the hope that they have for new life. Ezekiel witnesses the impossible happening before him as the bones come together, take on flesh and become a living once again.
But the point is not merely hope for the sake of hope. It is not merely having a confidence in confidence that things will somehow work out.
The bones come together and are filled with new life because God made it happen. Our hope is not in a vision of a better future, but in the One who holds that future. He is God of resurrection who took the death of the Son of God and transformed it into the source of life for all in the resurrection. There is no limit to what God can do, especially in doing what He seems to love best, and that is making something from nothing, and brining life to what was dead.
So my prayer today is for those who are feeling hopeless – maybe because of the fires, or things in their personal life, or whatever. There is always hope because the God of resurrection is always at work. I am praying for the Holy Spirit to bless and lead especially those who need an infusion of hope today. May God fill their hearts with hope that comes from knowing that He is at work in all things for good (Romans 8:28).
