Celebration of Love (Song of Solomon 7-8)

These chapters are the most explicit in this book in depicting the delight that the Lover and the Beloved have in each other and in expressing that love through physical intimacy. It is a beautiful and poetic celebration of God’s gift of romantic love and the connection between that love and sexual intimacy. Beautiful, appropriate, and holy.
It is sad, however, to consider how this gift has been twisted and perverted in our fallen broken world. Sex becomes something separated from the committed loving oneness of marriage and becomes a form of entertainment, or mere self-expression. It becomes something dirty, shameful, or in its worst form something associated with violence and cruelty. One of God’s greatest earthly gifts is twisted to become one of satan’s most useful tools in leading people astray.
So my prayer today is once again for God to bless this gift within the marriages of our community. I pray that husbands and wives find in each other the delight expressed in this book. I am also praying that the people of God turn away from the lies of satan, our culture, and our own sinful hearts regarding this gift, and instead live lives that praise God for His goodness and wisdom and love.
(And as we come to the end of this book, I must add that I have found it quite an amusing and appropriate God-thing that this book came up on the schedule of Moravian readings this week, in the days before my youngest daughter’s wedding. May God bless her and her beloved as they speak their vows this weekend!)
